Episode 30: Supporting male survivors of domestic abuse
One in 6-7 men is a domestic abuse survivor*, but only half of male victims (49%) fail to tell anyone they are a victim. Stigma, fear, shame, misinformation and societal pressures all contribute to men suffering in silence and not reporting their perpetrator.
In this episode, hosts Matt & Liza were joined by Tom Nash, aka Mr Divorce Coach, a specialist Divorce, Separation and Family Coach, to talk through the challenges faced by men struggling and trapped in abusive relationships.
Using his expertise and insight from supporting male clients, Tom talks about the different types of abuse, red flags and signs to look for, and the far-reaching and life-changing impact.
The conversation then turns to what holds men back from reporting abuse, and that men actually want to talk, they just need a safe and non-judgmental place to do so. Before exploring the different support available, and how to plan and create a safe exit strategy.
If you are in immediate danger of domestic abuse, please call 999 and ask for the police, or alternatively you can access support at: Mankind Initiative support helpline: 01823 334 244 and Respect, mens advice line: 0808 801 0327.
